There is one email that makes every Desi designer sweat more than a laptop rendering a 4K video in May:
"What is your budget for this?"
Or the absolute worst: "What is your hourly rate?"
We panic. We freeze. We quickly do some mental math ("Uh, I want ₹15,000, but maybe they only have ₹5,000?"), and we reply with a low number just to get the "Yes."
The Amateur charges for their time. They say: "I cost ₹500/hour." The Director charges for value. They say: "This project will solve X problem for you, so the investment is ₹40,000."
But saying that number out loud is terrifying. So today, we are using AI to remove the fear. We are going to roleplay the money talk before you ever hit "Send."
The Negotiation Play
1. The Value Anchor Before you reply, ask AI to help you frame the value, not the hours. Instead of "I will design a logo (10 hours)," use AI to rewrite it as: "I will build a brand identity that builds trust for your upcoming launch." Big difference.
2. The 'Kanjoos Client' Simulator Paste the client's offer into your AI tool. Tell the AI to act as a "Budget-Conscious Client" and roleplay a negotiation. Practice saying "No" to a low number. Practice asking for more. It’s better to stutter in front of ChatGPT than in front of a paying client.
3. The 'Walk-Away' Number Ask the AI: "I need to make ₹X to survive. If the project takes Y hours, what is the minimum I can accept before I am actually losing money?" (The math often shocks you—you might realize that ₹3,000 logo gig pays you less than a coffee shop job per hour).
The 'Salary Negotiator' Prompt
(Copy the text below, replace the parts in [brackets], and paste it into ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini.)
Act as a tough but fair Client. I am a Designer negotiating a project rate.
The Context: The client wants [e.g., a landing page redesign for a startup]. They offered: [₹8,000]. I want to charge: [₹25,000].
Your Task: Roleplay this negotiation with me.
Start by objecting to my price ("That seems expensive for just a design").
Wait for my reply.
Critique my reply. Did I sound confident? Did I justify the value? Or did I sound desperate?
🧠 Pixel’s Note
Pricing is 90% psychology. If you charge ₹1,500, the client treats you like a generic pixel-pusher. They will micromanage every font choice.
If you charge ₹80,000, they treat you like a Partner. They trust you. Using AI to practice your "money script" helps you sound like the Partner, even if you are just starting out. Fake the confidence until the bank balance makes it real.
Before & After: The "Logo" Gig
The Context: A freelance gig for a startup logo.
❌ The 'Before' (The Panic) Client: "We only have ₹5,000 budget." Designer: "Oh, okay, I can do that. I really want to work with you." (Result: You work for 20 hours. You make ₹250/hour. You hate the project. You hate the font. You hate life.)
✅ The 'After' (The AI-Prepped Script) Client: "We only have ₹5,000 budget." Designer (Prepared): "I understand the budget is tight. However, for a full identity that you can trademark and use for years, my minimum engagement starts at ₹20,000. If ₹5,000 is the hard cap, I can offer a simple 'wordmark' refresh instead of the full logo package. Which works better for you?" (Result: Client either finds the money, or you do less work for the same rate. You win either way.)
